Tel Aviv- the 24 hour city- For the younger voyagers
”Of course the food, beaches and beautiful people heighten my love for this city but what I love most is the way of life here; how eclectic and vibrant it is across the city, while there is also an unstinted dose of a laid-back attitude. Like in all countries, one person wakes up at 3am while the other wakes up at 4pm. In Tel Aviv, however, one individual wakes up before sunrise to prepare for a weekend hike in the desert to fulfil his unruffled nature urges while the late sleeper is after a long night shift at the delicious, trendy twenty four hour breakfast joint, Benedict. Considered a small metropolis, in comparison to other cosmopolitan cities around the world, it is sprinkled with diversity, dispersing a range of characters, backgrounds and culture.
I grew up in London which also offers rich cultural experiences, but I never had the opportunity to fully immerse myself in all of them consistently. I always felt like an outsider, even at my weekly curry restaurant, unlike 24 Rupee, a small, hidden Indian gem in South Tel Aviv. I felt most welcome from my first visit to the cosy, lounge restaurant where you are requested to sit at low tables, having removed your shoes upon entering, with people you may not necessarily know, while munching away on their delicious Tali and other Indian dishes. You almost feel as if you are in India; in the hub of the Israeli-hippie, dominated part, that is.
If Indian or sitting on the floor isn’t your cup of tea, then on the other side of the scale is another restaurant where I felt well received, probably because of the higher prices and gourmet food. I felt like I had been transported to Barcelona, sitting in the heart of the Carmel market, HaBasta serves delicious tapas dishes and a range of local and foreign wine.
The diversity of Tel Aviv is not solely associated to the culinary world. I am yet to discuss nightlife, the beaches and cultural activities. On some days I am in the mood to experience more of a chic and trendy lifestyle whereas on others I acquire a more nonchalant and relaxed disposition and Tel Aviv caters towards both these spirits.
There are the more hip and neighbourly bars such as Shesek and Rosa Parks, where non-Hebrew speakers are most welcome and there is Florentine; an area in south Tel Aviv, resembling the Brick Lane of London or Brooklyn of New York, which offers many bars with a thespian and artistic feel to them. Sometimes, however, I like to head out towards the more alternative places. For those of you who enjoy dancing then Michatronix, Radio EPGB and Milk are three spots to party the night away with intellectual and entertaining Tel Avivians. The first involves ringing a doorbell and gazing into a camera before entering, the second requires you to climb down stairs to a basement bar while the third has a row of Tel Avivian hipsters queuing up every Friday night eagerly awaiting the extravaganza.
After a night out, I like to relax on one of the quintessentially diverse beaches of Tel Aviv. On the days I want to feel like a goddess; lying on the beach beds with my favourite ice coffees, better than any Starbucks frappucino, Hof Hatzook is the place to lounge. One almost feels like they have been relocated to St. Tropez, with the women sporting high heeled flip flops and sun oil while the men are reclining in their Ralph Lauren Swimming trunks and designer sunglasses. The music is chilled like Ibiza and the setting more secluded than other beaches in Tel Aviv, if you’re seeking alone time. One some days, however, I want to sit on a beach, and be as Israeli and authentic as the Sabra fruit. Gordon beach not only provides local Tel Avians on their mats from an India trip, smoking nargilla, but additional gorgeous matkot (paddle ball) and volleyball players.
After some relaxing, head out to some galleries on Gordon Street, watch a foreign film at the Cinematheque, go on a bike ride in the Yarkon park and drink some coffee with the trendy Tel Avians at Shine coffee bar or the more intellectual bohemians on the corner of Levontin street before heading out on your second wild night out in Tel Aviv.
While the list of restaurants, bars, beaches, galleries and coffee shops in Tel Aviv is endless, listed above are a few of my favourite things. We live in a post modern world, and what better place to pick ‘n’ mix, than the cosmopolitan city of Tel Aviv, the city that never sleeps.
